ASUS VA24DQ Review

For gamers looking for an affordable IPS monitor that comes with some of the most impressive specs in its price range, the ASUS VA24DQ is worth consideration.

The monitor is excellent for gaming because of its short response time and Adaptive-Sync up to 75Hz, and it is also excellent for daily usage because of its IPS panel, which has vivid colours and broad viewing angles.

What distinguishes this monitor from the other similar options is incorporating a DisplayPort input, which allows you to utilise Adaptive-Sync with compatible NVIDIA graphics cards.

Our in-depth review covers both the positive and negative aspects of this monitor to make your buying decision easier.

Image Quality

The ASUS VA24DQ monitor has a 23.8-inch IPS panel with 178-degree broad viewing angles, a 1,000:1 static contrast ratio, a peak brightness of 250 nits, a standard sRGB color gamut, and dithered 8-bit color depth support (6-bit + 2-bit FRC).

The 1080p resolution is still regarded as the industry standard and is the most widely used, and since it’s displayed on a 23.8′′ screen, you get excellent detail clarity and plenty of screen space.

Furthermore, since 1080p isn’t very heavy on your GPU, even if your PC isn’t particularly powerful, you shouldn’t have any difficulty maintaining a reasonable frame rate in video games.

Moving on, the IPS panel technology guarantees the most consistent and accurate colors, which is excellent since this monitor can even do some entry-level color-critical tasks.

Of course, you’ll need a fully factory-calibrated monitor or calibration equipment for professional-grade accuracy.

The image will stay almost flawless irrespective of your viewing angle thanks to the monitor’s broad 178° viewing angles. This is particularly helpful for office use as well as movie nights, as your boss, coworkers, and friends can view the screen from any angle without any colour washout.

The ASUS VA24DQ also has amazing brightness. In fact, some users have complained that the brightness is too bright in normal lighting circumstances and hurts your eyes. Not only that, but even at zero level, the brightness is higher than most normal monitors. Overall, the monitor is great if you wish to watch movies in high ambient lighting rooms.

Although the monitor has a 1000:1 contrast ratio, don’t expect it to deliver excellent results as reviewers complain that the contrast was dismal. Whites will appear rather bluish, whereas blacks will appear dark gray. So if you are looking for a monitor mainly to play dark-themed games that require you to pay attention to shadows and other elements as a part of the gameplay, this monitor may not be the best option for you.

Performance

The input lag of the ASUS VA24DQ is just 10ms, resulting in an undetectable delay between your operations and the result on the screen.

Compared to conventional 60Hz displays, its 75Hz refresh rate offers a tiny but perceptible increase in motion clarity, while the 5ms GtG pixel response time efficiently removes apparent ghosting in fast-paced games.

Additionally, the display supports Adaptive-Sync, which enables FreeSync on compatible AMD graphics cards through DisplayPort and HDMI and G-SYNC Compatible on approved NVIDIA graphics cards via DisplayPort.

This technology uses a variable refresh rate (VRR) to synchronize the monitor’s refresh rate with the GPU’s frame rate, thereby reducing screen tearing and stuttering without adding any perceptible input latency.

Because the VRR range is just 48-75Hz, Adaptive-Sync will cease functioning if your FPS (Frames Per Second) rate falls outside of that range.

To manually extend the range, you may use CRU (Custom Resolution Utility), a free third-party software.

As with overclocking, the amount of VRR range you may increase will vary depending on the unit of the monitor you have.

Overall, due to its minimal input latency, fast response time, and variable refresh rate, the ASUS VA24DQ provides a smooth gaming experience.

One issue most users face with this monitor is IPS glow, which appears on all IPS panel displays. This is a known issue with the technology, similar to backlight bleeding, except the ‘glowing’ is evident around the screen’s borders.

The IPS glow is most apparent when the brightness is set extremely high, and you’re viewing dark content in a dark environment. The amount of visible lighting varies across units, but it’s quite tolerable in all except the most extreme cases. You may even notice some dead pixels apart from the IPS glow.

Features

Five hotkeys are located under the bottom bezel of the screen on the left side, in addition to a power button; the hotkeys are utilized for OSD (On-Screen Display) menu navigation.

You may use them as input source selection, brightness, and low-blue light filter shortcuts even if they aren’t on the menu (you can assign the last two can be assigned keys to different functions).

The Splendid pre-calibrated image modes are the first thing you’ll see when you open the OSD menu (Scenery, Theater, Game, Night View, sRGB, Reading, Darkroom, and Standard).

If you prefer more realistic colors, we suggest choosing the Standard or sRGB modes. You can use this website to check how your monitor performs in various picture tests and make any required changes.

The Blue Light Filter feature, which removes the dangerous low-blue lights, provides a pleasant viewing experience, coupled with the monitor’s flicker-free backlight.

Of course, basic image adjustment options like brightness, contrast, saturation, sharpness, and color temperature are also available.

Trace Free (response time overdrive, use the default option) and GamePlus are two more gaming features.

The GamePlus option brings up a menu with adjustable crosshairs, on-screen timers, and an FPS meter that tracks the monitor’s refresh rate.

Finally, QuickFit creates a virtual grid on your screen with different dimensions for pictures (22, 35, 46, 56, 57, and 81), documents (B5, letter), and grids (three centered vertical lines or 33 splits).

For the best picture quality, make sure the following features are turned off: VividPixel, ASCR, and ECO Mode.

Design & Connectivity

Ultra-thin bezels, perfect for multi-monitor setups, an anti-glare, matte coating that minimizes reflections, -5°/23° tilt adjustment, and 100x100mm VESA mount compatibility are all features of the ASUS VA24DQ IPS monitor.

DisplayPort 1.2, HDMI 1.4, VGA, a headphone port, and twin 2W integrated speakers are among the connectivity options.

Despite the lack of a completely ergonomic stand or USB ports, it’s very unusual to find all – VESA mount compatibility, audio jacks, and DisplayPort – on a monitor in this price range!

Final Thoughts

The ASUS VA24DQ is the best gaming monitor under the $150 price segment. Whether you are looking for a monitor for gaming, office use, productivity work, or streaming purposes, this monitor is a great option with impressive specs. However, considering that its just a 75Hz monitor, this may not be the best for intense, fast paced gaming.
