Viotek 109013NH GFV24C Review

Viotek is not a manufacturer that comes up often in gaming circles, but they offer some interesting features in an affordable package. They claim to be an innovative company that make the best products for tech enthusiasts across the world. Their wish to lead in the industry instead of follow has brought us the Viotek 24-Inch Ultra-Thin 144Hz Gaming Monitor.

The monitor is known as one of the cheapest 144Hz monitors on the market but the question remains: Does a budget price mean a budget experience? Let’s see how this monitor performs.

Image Quality

With a proliferation of gaming monitors flooding the market, it’s important to get the biggest bang for your buck. On paper at least, this monitor looks really good. At 1920 x 1080, the monitor offers some strong resolutions right off the bat. It stands out as a gaming monitor due to its flat VA panel, despite the many curved monitors on the market right now.

The monitor boasts a 16.7 million colours gamut with a contrast ratio of 3000:1. Some users report a less than stellar out-of-the-box experience and changes are required through software profiles. Brightness is only adequate at 220cd/m2 which is fine for daily tasks in an enclosed space but will suffer in strong sunlight. The screen delivers a consistent brightness across the panel, so users should have no complaints about that.
Viotek states that the monitor has a viewing angle of H178° / V178° but this might be a stretch as color shift becomes noticeable far sooner than reaching those angles. The monitor is supposed to be ideal for anything from movies to games but there are certain issues with response time and blurring that make it problematic.

Performance

The gaming monitor boasts a 144Hz refresh rate and 4ms response time. A lot of users are happy to report that the refresh rate does mostly perform as advertised but the response time is seriously lacking, with some users clocking it at closer to a 10ms response time.

When the monitor was tested with F1 2019, the frame rate was strong but led to some blurring which is far from ideal for gaming. Gameplay was smooth without any dropped frames or stuttering, but there was some ghosting. AMD Freesync is supposed to eliminate choppy gameplay and does a relatively good job of that.
The monitor did not perform well in darker scenes , with some black level smearing that made the game appear washed out. This is especially concerning since Viotek advertises an FPS/RTS optimization which is supposed to assist in darker scenes.
The monitor is also supposed to have GAMEPLUS, which overlays crosshairs on shooting games.

Design and Build Quality

The Viotek Gaming Monitor has a thin, unobtrusive bezel on a flat screen. It is only available in black and while it has a simple design with no lines or lights, it has an interesting wedge design at the back that sets it apart from the average budget monitor.

The screen is somewhat matte with an anti-glare treated screen, keeping eye pressure to a minimum with the inclusion of low blue light features.

Due to the affordable price tag, Viotek has had to cut some corners and the quality of the build does suffer somewhat. That does not mean that the monitor looks cheap, but it has a basic plastic base that unfortunately has some design flaws. The display can be tilted (between 5-15°) but not raised or lowered, which some people might find frustrating on a stand. It can be mounted using a VESA monitor mount if height is an issue.  The monitor wobbles quite a lot when bumped. The footprint of the monitor is quite small, which makes it ideal for multi-screen displays.

Connectivity

The monitor does not have a lot of bells and whistles in this department. It has two HDMI ports, one display port and a 3.5mm audio jack. There is no speaker built into the monitor so the audio out port is required for any sound.

Features

The On Screen Display (OSD) is quite basic and can only be controlled through tiny buttons at the bottom of the lower bezel. There is not a lot that can be changed using the OSD except the usual basic setting like brightness, contrast, screen positioning and some basic colour control. There are no built in game or movie modes, which is disappointing in a monitor that is supposed to cater to gamers.

The monitor has low blue light to help with eye strain.

Pros and Cons

Pros IconAffordable price point cons icon Poor response time performance
Pros Icon Decent viewing angles cons icon Limited OSD controls
Pros Icon The monitor is protected with a Zero-Tolerance Dead Pixel Policy and has a 3-year limited warranty

Final Thoughts

As much as the Viotek monitor is an affordable full-HD monitor, it does not match up well with other monitors within the same price range. Check our article on the Best Gaming Monitor Under 150 for various options in the same price bracket.

The most notable competitor comes from within Viotek itself with the curved GN24CB 24-inch monitor that offers all the same features that the GFV24C offers without the bulk of the cons at only $10 more. AOC C24G1and Acer XFA240 are two similar sized monitors at close to the same price point. While the affordable price is very attractive, the monitor has some deal-breaker issues. With multitudinous problems such as ghosting, blurring and a limited colour gamut, gamers can do much better than this monitor.
