What is Gamma Shift?

The definition for Gamma Shift provided by DisplayNinja is as follows:

“Viewing angles of VA panel displays also affect the perceived gamma, which results in saturation and gamma shifts depending on the angle you’re looking at the screen.”

In simple words, colors displayed on a VA panel can look different at different parts of the screen, for example, the color red can appear to have a slightly different shade at the middle of the display in comparison to the bottom left corner of the display.

Unless you are specifically looking for it (using test images), the difference in gamma and saturation in the same color at different parts of the display really isn’t much noticeable during everyday use.

It is far more irritating and detectable on TN panel monitors in comparison to the IPS and VA panels.

So what all this means is that if your work is color-critical, it is strongly recommended that you use an IPS monitor which offers consistent colors and greater viewing angles rather than a TN or VA panel.
