What is Screen Resolution?

Every screen is made up of tiny elements called pixels. The resolution specifies the amount of pixels present on a computer screen. For example a 2560x1440p (2K) monitor contains 2560 pixels horizontally and 1440 pixels vertically, which means a total of 3,686,400 pixels are present on screen. The greater the screen resolution, the sharper and more realistic the image on the screen would look.

The following is a list of typical screen resolutions that most monitors out there feature.

720p1280x720p
1080p1920x1080p
2K2560x1440p
4K3840x2160p
8K7680x4320p

Nowadays, it is common to find most devices to have a HD screen, as it makes the device affordable and the quality of the image amazing, however 4K is also becoming increasingly common as many AAA games out there have a 4K option which just makes the experience so much more wonderful as it double the resolution from 1920x1080p to 3840x2160p. Another common resolution is the UHD (Ultra HD), which is basically 4K but at the lower end of 3840x2160p

8K has also started to pick up the pace and can now be easily spotted in the market in many high-end TV’s and monitors but they are quite expensive and the viewing options are quite restricted.

Screen resolution and Screen size

Screen resolution and size aren’t related, For example a 5.8” phone could feature a resolution of 1920x1080p, while a 24” monitor could also have a 1080p display. In terms of pixels, because both the devices have the same number of pixels, they will be able to show the exact picture, except the picture would be much larger on the monitor because it is physically larger in size in comparison to the phone. However the picture on the phone would be sharper, while it might look blurry on the monitor as the distance between the pixels would be greater and thus the pixel density would be lower.

Likewise two monitors of the exact same dimensions can have different resolutions and in such a case, the monitor with the greater resolution would have a sharper image as the pixel density would be greater.
